It\u2019s even <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/full\/10.1073\/pnas.1911999117\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">true for most other mammals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s a very robust phenomenon all over the world, totally conserved in sickness, during famines, during epidemics, even during times of starvation,\u201d said Dr. Dena Dubal, a professor of neurology at the University of California, San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the reasons women live longer are complicated and less established \u2014 and the fact that they are outliving men doesn\u2019t necessarily mean they are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/03\/well\/live\/health-span-aging.html\" title>living better<\/a>. Women tend to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/eige.europa.eu\/publications-resources\/toolkits-guides\/gender-equality-index-2019-report\/women-live-longer-poorer-health?language_content_entity=en\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">have shorter<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/mhi\/our-insights\/closing-the-womens-health-gap-a-1-trillion-dollar-opportunity-to-improve-lives-and-economies\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">health spans<\/a> (the number of healthy years a person lives) than men, said B\u00e9r\u00e9nice Benayoun, an associate professor at the U.S.C. Leonard Davis School of Gerontology.
