a total of 30,000 in the UK &#8211; has uncontrolled seizures caused by brain abnormalities too subtle for the human eye to see on scans.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Child epilepsy experts say the AI tool has &#8220;huge potential&#8221; and opens up avenues for treatment.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But more studies on the long-term benefits for patients are needed before it can be licensed and used in clinics.   <!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Brain abnormalities called focal cortical dysplasia are a common cause of epilepsy, especially when medication cannot control seizures.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Seizures affect people in different ways &#8211; symptoms include jerking and shaking,   becoming stiff and losing awareness &#8211; and can mean regular visits to accident-and-emergency units.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Removing a small part of the brain can be a safe and effective way of stopping them &#8211; but if radiologists cannot see the tiny lesions on brain scans, diagnosis, treatment and surgery can be delayed.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">&#8216;Really difficult&#8217;<!-- --><\/h2>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">For this study, <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/fullarticle\/10.1001\/jamaneurol.2024.5406?guestAccessKey=e833d51e-69c6-4a26-bee3-66b84e3e9b0c&amp;utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_content=tfl&amp;utm_term=022425\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">published in JAMA Neurology<!-- --><\/a>, the researchers, from King&#8217;s College London and University College London, fed their tool magnetic-resonance-imaging (MRI) scans from more than 1,185 adults and children at 23 hospitals around the world, 703 of whom had brain abnormalities.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The tool, MELD Graph, was able to process the images more quickly than a doctor could &#8211; and in more detail &#8211; which could mean more timely treatment and fewer  costly tests and procedures, lead researcher Dr Konrad Wagstyl said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The AI would require human oversight, however, and many of the abnormalities were still missed.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;It&#8217;s like finding one character on five pages of solid black text,&#8221;  Dr Wagstyl said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;AI can find about two-thirds that doctors miss &#8211; but a third are still really difficult to find.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">At one hospital in Italy, the tool identified a subtle lesion missed by radiologists, in a 12-year-old boy who had tried nine different medications but still had seizures every day.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 jFCfG\">\n<div data-testid=\"image\" class=\"sc-a34861b-1 jxzoZC\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/medexperts.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 cOpVbP hide-when-no-script\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/medexperts.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/9fe5b8a0-f2a6-11ef-b1bc-c7140a41b5a8.png.webp\" alt=\"King&#039;s College London One male researcher stands, pointing at a computer screen, while two female researchers sit in front of the screen, with one holding a computer mouse.\" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 efFcac\" \/><span class=\"sc-a34861b-2 fxQYxK\">King&#8217;s College London<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Study co-author and childhood epilepsy consultant Prof Helen Cross said it had the potential &#8220;to rapidly identify abnormalities that can be removed and potentially cure the epilepsy&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Uncontrolled epilepsy was &#8220;incapacitating&#8221;, she said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Many of the children she sees as a consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital have had years of seizures and investigations before a lesion is found.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Charity Epilepsy Action said the new AI tool&#8217;s potential was &#8220;really exciting&#8221; and could give people faster diagnosis, but did not solve the issue of lack of specialist epilepsy nurses in England.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;It remains early days and, as always, we must proceed with caution,&#8221; said Ley Sander from the Epilepsy Society, adding that if the tool could identify more people as candidates for brain surgery, that could be &#8220;life-changing for many more people with epilepsy&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The researchers are hoping for official approval to use MELD Graph as a diagnostic tool &#8211;
