This week, Mr. Kennedy, now the federal health secretary, said that a commission established by President Trump to examine chronic disease rates would look into the use of pesticides, as well as childhood vaccines, microplastics and more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Kennedy\u2019s opposition to herbicides, particularly a widely used chemical called glyphosate, has earned support from some environmental advocates, so-called \u201cMAHA moms\u201d and wellness influencers. But some of the claims he and others have made about glyphosate \u2014 including that it is potentially linked to cancer, gluten allergies and a variety of other health issues \u2014 are based on science that is still not settled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Prominent organizations have come to markedly different judgments on glyphosate after reviewing the research. In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iarc.who.int\/featured-news\/media-centre-iarc-news-glyphosate\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">classified glyphosate<\/a> as \u201cprobably carcinogenic to humans.\u201d Two years later, the Environmental Protection Agency <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pesticides\/epa-releases-draft-risk-assessments-glyphosate\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">concluded that glyphosate<\/a> was \u201cnot likely to be carcinogenic to humans\u201d and that it posed \u201cno other meaningful risks to human health when the product is used according to the pesticide label.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So should you be trying to avoid it? It became the most used weedkiller nationwide after Monsanto introduced genetically modified crops that were resistant to glyphosate\u2019s effects, said Marty Williams, an ecologist with the United States Department of Agriculture\u2019s research service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/data-graphics\/toxic-herbicides-map-showing-high-use-state-rcna50052#\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Nearly half<\/a> of all planted acres of corn and soybeans in the United States are treated with glyphosate-based herbicides, as are some crops like tree nuts and grapes.
