Is this true?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If you browse social media for information on healthy sleep habits, you may stumble across <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@thewellnesswaylargo\/video\/7311740483749940526\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">one of the many posts<\/a> arguing that women require more sleep than men \u2014 \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/Cl63-Y3p-Ex\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">dramatically more sleep<\/a>,\u201d some even claim. The reasons given vary, including hormonal differences and the notion that women have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DD9_ffXPPDZ\/?igsh=dGdxaXQya3JsMmht\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">faster-working brains<\/a> than men do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As it turns out, we don\u2019t have any legitimate research that suggests these claims are true.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere is no evidence that there is a fundamental biological reason women need more sleep,\u201d said Dr. Suzanne Bertisch, a physician specializing in sleep disorders<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\"> <\/em>at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital in Boston.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On average, women do seem to spend several more minutes in bed every night than men do, but that doesn\u2019t mean they require more sleep, she said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-316bc781\">Men and Women Sleep Differently<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Only a handful of studies have evaluated differences in sleep duration among men and women. In a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4164903\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">landmark study<\/a> from 2013, researchers analyzed survey data from more than 56,000 adults in the United States. When participants were asked how they spent their time over a recent 24-hour period, women reported devoting an average of 11 minutes more to sleep the previous night than men did.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This didn\u2019t necessarily mean that the women actually slept for 11 minutes more than men, however. As the study explained, the time participants reported also included the minutes they spent attempting to sleep \u2014 and women are far <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7714764\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">more likely than men<\/a> to experience insomnia, said Rebecca Robbins, a sleep scientist and assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. The 2013 study also found that women were nearly five times as likely as men to report sleep interruptions as a result of caregiving, usually for a child.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Research suggests that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/13\/well\/women-sleep-issues-hormones.html\" title>women experience lower quality sleep<\/a>, on average, than men do \u2014 whether they\u2019re caregivers or not.
