Shortly after receiving a \u201cstop work\u201d order from the Trump administration, the institute closed its Office of Diversity and Inclusion, removed prominent links to its work on D.E.I. from its website\u2019s homepage and paused projects on related themes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a> highlights the Academies\u2019 interest in artificial intelligence and \u201cour work to build a robust economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The quick about-face reflects the severe impact that President Trump\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/ending-radical-and-wasteful-government-dei-programs-and-preferencing\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">executive order<\/a> on D.E.I. is having on scientific institutions across the nation, both governmental and private. National laboratories under the Department of Energy took down web pages that had expressed a commitment to diversity, while the department <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/science\/articles\/executive-order-update-pier-plan-requirement\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">suspended its promotion<\/a> of inclusive and equitable research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">None of these federal agencies responded to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many organizations initiated D.E.I. programs as a way to correct historical underrepresentation of minorities in the sciences.
