They can be overwhelming, complicated or quiet \u2014 but we experience at least one emotion 90 percent of the time, according to a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0145450\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">2015 study<\/a> that examined the emotional lives of more than 11,000 people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This finding doesn\u2019t shock Ethan Kross, the director of the Emotion and Self-Control Laboratory at the University of Michigan, who has been studying the science of emotion for over two decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">What did surprise him, however, were results from <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/citeseerx.ist.psu.edu\/document?repid=rep1&amp;type=pdf&amp;doi=98eaf755aa4cdfaaae539839cecb859654aeef82\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">another study<\/a>, which found that about 40 percent of participants believed that you can\u2019t control your emotions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI was really floored,\u201d Dr. Kross said. \u201cIf you don\u2019t even think it is possible to manage your emotions, why would you ever try to do it?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He contends that emotions, even negative ones, are information, and that we can often find ways to make them work for us. It\u2019s not possible to control every part of our emotional lives, said Dr. Kross (who admits that he sometimes still feels fear before he has to speak publicly).
