His construction job \u2014 which required him to bend, balance, lift heavy objects and stand for hours at a time \u2014 became grueling. He was also a competitive runner, but the discomfort affected his ability to train.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMy hips, hamstrings and lower back were so tight they felt like they\u2019d snap if I stood up quickly,\u201d Mr. Root said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Massages helped, but the relief only lasted a day or two. Eventually, he saw a physical therapist who explained the source of his issue: His glutes weren\u2019t strong enough to properly move his hips through all those repetitive motions. His hip flexors were bearing most of the burden, making them tight and overworked. The physical therapist gave him a mobility and strength regimen, and after eight weeks Mr. Root was able to resume most activities without pain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMost people don\u2019t think about their hips at all unless they have a problem with them,\u201d said Miho Tanaka, director of the Women\u2019s Sports Medicine Program at Mass General Brigham. Other joints and muscles will take over, even if they\u2019re not strong enough to manage the load. That can lead to muscle <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/14\/well\/move\/muscle-imbalance-pain-symptoms.html\" title>imbalances<\/a>, pain or overuse injuries from your back down to your ankles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A little movement can significantly improve <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/21\/well\/move\/mobility-workout-exercises-aging.html\" title>your mobility<\/a>, but it takes more than just holding a stretch.
