To protect their livestock, the villagers chased down the carnivore in a pickup truck and killed it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When Abdullah Nagy, a zoologist at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, received a video of the hunt from a colleague who was in the region, he thought he was being pranked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI was asking, \u2018Where are you actually? Because that species doesn\u2019t exist in our country,\u2019\u201d Dr. Nagy said. \u201c\u2018Are you sure that you didn\u2019t cross into Sudan or something?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Additional photos offered persuasive proof: A spotted hyena had crossed into Egypt, about 300 miles north of the nearest known population of the animals in Sudan.
