There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">According to the survey\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eventpage\/at00sqr6q8\/shakemap\/intensity\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">self-reporting tool<\/a>, people reported feeling shaking as far south as Providence, R.I., about 100 miles southwest of the epicenter, and as far north as Augusta, Maine, about 90 miles away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Maine Emergency Management Agency <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MaineEMA\/status\/1883908069710786917\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said on social media<\/a> that the earthquake occurred at 10:22 a.m. As seismologists review available data, they may revise the earthquake\u2019s reported magnitude.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The morning shake caught many New Englanders off guard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Joe Watts, the chief executive of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/starisland.org\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Star Island<\/a>, a summer community and conference center just off the coast of New Hampshire, said he thought the boiler in his Portsmouth, N.H., office had exploded at first. A friend on the phone with him at the time of the earthquake described it as a truck driving into a building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The tremors lasted for about 10 seconds, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe\u2019re probably wimps compared to people in the Bay Area,\u201d he said. But for this quiet corner of New England, \u201cit was a big deal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Jane Sweeney, an activities assistant at a senior living community in Rye, N.H., seven miles south of Portsmouth, said she had just finished setting up for an art class around 10:30 a.m. when the floor and walls of the building began rocking so noticeably, she thought that the oil burner may have exploded in the basement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt was pretty scary \u2014 it really shook me up \u2014 and I ran to check on the residents,\u201d she said. \u201cEveryone was coming out of their rooms.
