Like many who participate in this <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/26\/well\/eat\/dry-january-guide.html\" title>monthlong sobriety challenge<\/a>, she reveled in the immediate benefits: She slept better, went to the gym more often and saved money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But as February approached, Ms. Van Antwerp felt excited \u2014 \u201cmaybe overly excited,\u201d she admitted \u2014 to drink again. She would be traveling to Southeast Asia for a six-week trip, and she imagined sipping a glass of wine in Bangkok when she got off the plane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI couldn\u2019t even wait that long,\u201d Ms. Van Antwerp, 40, said. \u201cI ended up drinking at the airport and getting too drunk right out of the gate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While people like Ms. Van Antwerp tend to put thought and effort into planning for a month of sobriety (and slogging through it), they don\u2019t necessarily consider the off-ramp \u2014 and what they want to take away from the experience. \u201cThat\u2019s one of the most important parts of the month,\u201d said Gillian Tietz, host of the \u201cSober Powered\u201d podcast, \u201cand something a lot of people don\u2019t think too much about.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/dar.13625\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">research suggests<\/a> that people who participate in Dry January tend to be more concerned about their drinking habits during the rest of the year than those who don\u2019t.
