{"id":19917,"date":"2025-01-13T23:09:07","date_gmt":"2025-01-14T00:09:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/?p=19917"},"modified":"2025-01-14T03:25:30","modified_gmt":"2025-01-14T03:25:30","slug":"gps-turn-to-ai-to-help-with-patient-workload","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/?p=19917","title":{"rendered":"GPs turn to AI to help with patient workload"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 ejjhCR\">\n<div data-testid=\"hero-image\" class=\"sc-a34861b-1 jxzoZC\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/df0146c0-9cf8-11ef-9d47-3962c94c3bbb.jpg.webp\" alt=\"Deepali Misra-Sharp Dr Deepali Misra-Sharp sits at her work desk, with pictures and cards behind her.\" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 efFcac\" \/><span class=\"sc-a34861b-2 fxQYxK\">Deepali Misra-Sharp<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\"><b id=\"this-is-the-fifth-feature-in-a-six-part-series-that-is-looking-at-how-ai-is-changing-medical-research-and-treatments.\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kVRnKf\">This is the fifth feature in a six-part series that is looking at how AI is changing medical research and treatments.<!-- --><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The difficulty of getting an appointment with a GP is a familiar gripe in the UK.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Even when an appointment is secured, <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rcgp.org.uk\/News\/Response-BJGP-study-GP-numbers-workload\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">the rising workload faced by doctors<!-- --><\/a> means those meetings can be shorter than either the doctor or patient would like.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But Dr Deepali Misra-Sharp, a GP partner in Birmingham, has found that AI has alleviated a chunk of the administration from her job, meaning she can focus more on patients.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Dr Mirsa-Sharp started using Heidi Health, a free AI-assisted medical transcription tool that listens and transcribes patient appointments, about four months ago and says it has made a big difference.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cUsually when I\u2019m with a patient, I am writing things down and it takes away from the consultation,\u201d she says. \u201cThis now means I can spend my entire time locking eyes with the patient and actively listening. It makes for a more quality consultation.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She says the tech reduces her workflow, saving her \u201ctwo to three minutes per consultation, if not more\u201d. She reels off other benefits: \u201cIt reduces the risk of errors and omissions in my medical note taking.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">With a workforce in decline while the number of patients continues to grow, GPs face immense pressure. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A single full-time GP is now responsible for 2,273 patients, up 17% since September 2015, <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bma.org.uk\/advice-and-support\/nhs-delivery-and-workforce\/pressures\/pressures-in-general-practice-data-analysis\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">according to the British Medical Association (BMA)<!-- --><\/a>.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Could AI be the solution to help GP\u2019s cut back on administrative tasks and alleviate burnout?<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Some research suggests it could. <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/topol.hee.nhs.uk\/\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">A 2019 report<!-- --><\/a> prepared by Health Education England estimated a minimal saving of one minute per patient from new technologies such as AI, equating to 5.7 million hours of GP time.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Meanwhile, <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oii.ox.ac.uk\/news-events\/almost-half-of-all-administrative-tasks-in-general-practice-could-be-automated-says-new-report\/\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">research by Oxford University<!-- --><\/a> in 2020, found that 44% of all administrative work in General Practice can now be either mostly or completely automated, freeing up time to spend with patients.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 jFCfG\">\n<div data-testid=\"image\" class=\"sc-a34861b-1 jxzoZC\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 cOpVbP hide-when-no-script\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/e69e3ee0-9ac5-11ef-860d-e138112a1565.jpg.webp\" alt=\"Corti Corti co-founders Lars Maaloe (left) and Andreas Cleve stand together with the sea behind them.\" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 efFcac\" \/><span class=\"sc-a34861b-2 fxQYxK\">Corti<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">One company working on that is Denmark&#8217;s Corti, which has developed AI that can listen to healthcare consultations, either over the phone or in person, and suggest follow-up questions, prompts, treatment options, as well as automating note taking.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Corti says its technology processes about 150,000 patient interactions per day across hospitals, GP surgeries and healthcare institutions across Europe and the US, totalling about 100 million encounters per year.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cThe idea is the physician can spend more time with a patient,\u201d says Lars Maal\u00f8e, co-founder and chief technology officer at Corti. He says the technology can suggest questions based on previous conversations it has heard in other healthcare situations.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cThe AI has access to related conversations and then it might think, well, in 10,000 similar conversations, most questions asked X and that has not been asked,\u201d says Mr Maal\u00f8e.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cI imagine GPs have one consultation after another and so have little time to consult with colleagues. It\u2019s giving that colleague advice.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He also says it can look at the historical data of a patient. \u201cIt could ask, for example, did you remember to ask if the patient is still suffering from pain in the right knee?\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But do patients want technology listening to and recording their conversations?<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Mr Maal\u00f8e says \u201cthe data is not leaving system\u201d. He does say it is good practice to inform the patient, though.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cIf the patient contests it, the doctor cannot record. We see few examples of that as the patient can see better documentation.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Dr Misra-Sharp says she lets patients know she has a listening device to help her take notes. \u201cI haven\u2019t had anyone have a problem with that yet, but if they did, I wouldn\u2019t do it.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 jFCfG\">\n<div data-testid=\"image\" class=\"sc-a34861b-1 jxzoZC\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 cOpVbP hide-when-no-script\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/6b343380-9ac6-11ef-860d-e138112a1565.png.webp\" alt=\"C the signs Women in the office looking at C the Signs software\" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 efFcac\" \/><span class=\"sc-a34861b-2 fxQYxK\">C the signs<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Meanwhile, currently, 1,400 GP practices across England are using the C the Signs, a platform which uses AI to analyse patients\u2019 medical records and check different signs, symptoms and risk factors of cancer, and recommend what action should be taken.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cIt can capture symptoms, such as cough, cold, bloating, and essentially in a minute it can see if there\u2019s any relevant information from their medical history,\u201d says C the Signs chief executive and co-founder Dr Bea Bakshi, who is also a GP.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The AI is trained on published medical research papers.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cFor example, it might say the patient is at risk of pancreatic cancer and would benefit from a pancreatic scan, and then the doctor will decide to refer to those pathways,\u201d says Dr Bakshi. \u201cIt won\u2019t diagnose, but it can facilitate.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She says they have conducted more than 400,000 cancer risk assessments in a real-world setting, detecting more than 30,000 patients with cancer across more than 50 different cancer types.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">An AI report published by the BMA this year found that \u201cAI should be expected to transform, rather than replace, healthcare jobs by automating routine tasks and improving efficiency\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In a statement, Dr Katie Bramall-Stainer, chair of General Practice Committee UK at the BMA, said: &#8220;We recognise that AI has the potential to transform NHS care completely &#8211; but if not enacted safely, it could also cause considerable harm. AI is subject to bias and error, can potentially compromise patient privacy and is still very much a work-in-progress.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Whilst AI can be used to enhance and supplement what a GP can offer as another tool in their arsenal, it&#8217;s not a silver bullet.
