{"id":19751,"date":"2025-01-10T06:47:32","date_gmt":"2025-01-10T07:47:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/medexperts.pro\/?p=19751"},"modified":"2025-01-10T14:25:27","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T14:25:27","slug":"i-woke-from-a-coma-to-find-my-baby-had-been-born","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/?p=19751","title":{"rendered":"I woke from a coma to find my baby had been born"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 ejjhCR\">\n<div data-testid=\"hero-image\" class=\"sc-a34861b-1 jxzoZC\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/medexperts.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1c13e3c0-cd09-11ef-9768-07308e806a68.jpg.webp\" alt=\"Atlanta Mcintyre A young pregnant woman in a hospital gown, attached to monitors\" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 efFcac\" \/><span class=\"sc-a34861b-2 fxQYxK\">Atlanta Mcintyre<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A woman who was placed in an induced coma after experiencing severe pregnancy sickness has described waking to find her baby had been born.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Atlanta McIntyre, 29, from Llantrisant in Rhondda Cynon Taf, had excessive nausea and vomiting during her pregnancy, known as <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/pregnancy\/related-conditions\/complications\/severe-vomiting\/\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">hyperemesis gravidarum (HG)<!-- --><\/a>.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">During one episode of vomiting, Ms McIntyre choked and had to be put into an induced coma by doctors.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">When she regained consciousness, she discovered that her daughter had been delivered by caesarean section.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I was very shocked and in disbelief,&#8221; said Ms McIntyre.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I remember telling all the nurses and my partner that they were lying to me about having had her.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Sickness in pregnancy, often called morning sickness, is very common, with eight out of 10 pregnant women experiencing symptoms.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But some pregnant women experience extreme vomiting and nausea, known as HG, which often needs hospital treatment.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">According to the NHS, HG affects about one to three in every 100 pregnant women.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;My sickness started early on &#8211; from the second I knew I was pregnant, before I even took a test,&#8221; Ms McIntyre said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Around about six weeks, the morning sickness really kicked in. Every morning, I was up being sick. I couldn&#8217;t keep medication down or anything like that. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;People kept telling me &#8216;It&#8217;ll get better after the first trimester&#8217; so, after 12 weeks, it&#8217;ll get better. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I hit around 14 weeks, and it was still weirdly severe to the point that I couldn&#8217;t keep liquids down. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;That&#8217;s when they diagnosed me with HG.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I was back and forth weekly, especially towards the end of my pregnancy, it was daily that I was back and forth to the hospital,&#8221; Ms McIntyre added.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In February 2024, during her 29th week of pregnancy, Ms McIntyre started being sick while eating.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I basically choked on [the vomit] and it went straight onto my lungs,&#8221; she said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Her [the baby&#8217;s] heart rate dropped drastically, and they said to my partner: &#8216;It&#8217;s time &#8211; we have to get her out now, otherwise she won&#8217;t make it&#8217;.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Ms McIntyre&#8217;s daughter, Poppy, was delivered prematurely at 29 weeks on 20 February, weighing 3lb (1.4kg).<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 jFCfG\">\n<div data-testid=\"image\" class=\"sc-a34861b-1 jxzoZC\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/medexperts.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 cOpVbP hide-when-no-script\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/medexperts.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/fd5f1d00-cdad-11ef-aa44-e1a2ca968acf.jpg.webp\" alt=\"Atlanta Mcintyre A newborn baby still in hospital, clutching its parents&#039; said Ms McIntyre. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Now, at 10 months old, Poppy is living at home and doing well.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">What is hyperemesis gravidarum (HG)?<!-- --><\/h2>\n<figure>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 gfTVSf\">\n<div data-testid=\"image\" class=\"sc-a34861b-1 jxzoZC\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/medexperts.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 cOpVbP hide-when-no-script\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/medexperts.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/af039040-cdd1-11ef-94cb-5f844ceb9e30.png.webp\" alt=\"A graphic image which details the symptoms of HG - prolonged severe nausea and vomiting, dehydration and weight loss\" class=\"sc-a34861b-0 efFcac\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<ul class=\"sc-5c9c90b0-0 cnfHHs\">\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is different from morning sickness, which affects about 80% of pregnant women<!-- --><\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">Morning sickness causes nausea and vomiting which usually improves by the 16th or 20th week of pregnancy<!-- --><\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">By contrast, women with HG can vomit more than 50 times a day and feel constantly and severely nauseous, significantly interfering with their daily lives<!-- --><\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">Complications of HG can include serious vitamin deficiency from the excessive vomiting, significant weight loss, dehydration and malnutrition, putting the health of both mother and baby at risk<!-- --><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Ms McIntyre hopes that by speaking about her experience of HG, she can encourage other pregnant women experiencing the condition to seek help.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I would say to other women &#8211; it&#8217;s not normal to feel like this,&#8221; she said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t be pushed aside and be told it&#8217;s just morning sickness&#8230; I was pretty much like the walking dead.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I was dizzy, I was lethargic, I couldn&#8217;t lift my head up, I had constant headaches, I was constantly dehydrated.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I couldn&#8217;t keep liquids down. Anything I smelt would set me off. I couldn&#8217;t eat greasy foods or anything like that. I could only eat bland food &#8211; rice, bread, ginger nut biscuits. That&#8217;s when it got really bad, when I couldn&#8217;t even keep that down.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;I did lose a lot of weight during my pregnancy.
