In her ears, invisible to all, were hearing aids.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI heard every single noise possible,\u201d she said. \u201cBackstage, onstage. The shoes on the stage sounded like cymbals in my ears. The music was so loud. The audience was ridiculously loud. Everything was magnified. It almost sounds artificial. I\u2019m like, is it really like this? Is this <em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">real<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It\u2019s been only three weeks since Mearns, 38, was fitted with semi-permanent hearing aids and one week since she stepped back into the role of Sugarplum in \u201cGeorge Balanchine\u2019s The Nutcracker\u201d for the first time since 2020. Her first performance, on Dec. 30, was shaky, she said. But on Friday night, her second \u2014 sensitive and seamless \u2014 \u201cthe feelings came back of Oh, you know how to do this,\u201d Mearns said in an interview. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing you need to worry about.
