But we are increasingly seeing athletes, like the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/14\/us\/lindsey-vonn-world-cup-retirement.html\" title>skier Lindsey Vonn<\/a>, 40, and the climber Chris Sharma, 43, staging midlife comebacks. Peak performance is still within reach for the rest of us, too. Just look at <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/messaging-custom-newsletters.nytimes.com\/dynamic\/render?CCPAOptOut=true&amp;productCode=RU&amp;uri=nyt%3A%2F%2Fnewsletter%2F51c885b3-5c95-5208-8d73-49ddc777d152&amp;isViewInBrowser=true\" title>Ken Rideout<\/a>, a father of four from Nashville who became serious about distance running in his mid-40s and then one of the world\u2019s fastest marathoners his age by his early 50s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">You can absolutely be fitter at 40 or 50 than you were at 30 \u2014 it will just take effort, said Dr. Elizabeth Matzkin, an orthopedic surgeon at Mass General Brigham Sports Medicine in Boston. \u201cAnd you have to approach training differently,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many people make the mistake of continuing the same workouts of their 20s into their 40s and beyond, said Dr. Miho Tanaka, who also works at Mass General Brigham, directing the Women\u2019s Sports Medicine program. But in order to build resilience in aging joints, most people need to completely change the way they exercise as they get older.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYour body will adapt, it just takes longer,\u201d she said, especially if you\u2019ve taken a prolonged break from exercise. And strength and cardio are just one part of your overall fitness equation. You might have been able to get away without warm ups, cool downs, mobility work and proper sleep and nutrition in your 20s. But they become nonnegotiables as we age, she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-669ae8d0\">Why it\u2019s harder to train as you age.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Your muscle mass <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2804956\/#_blank\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">starts declining<\/a> in your 30s. Gaining it requires ever more work as you get older, far more so for the body\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/7493202\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">fast-twitch muscle fibers<\/a>, which are responsible for explosive movements like sprinting, than for slow-twitch endurance muscles.
