(And the researchers behind Google\u2019s AlphaFold, an A.I. project on proteins that I gave a Good Tech Award <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/12\/27\/technology\/the-2021-good-tech-awards.html\" title>three years ago<\/a>, got a slightly more prestigious award this year \u2014 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/09\/science\/nobel-prize-chemistry.html\" title>the Nobel Prize in Chemistry<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But A.I. was not the only thing happening in Silicon Valley. This year, tech companies <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/05\/technology\/google-antitrust-ruling.html\" title>fought bitterly with regulators<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/08\/world\/americas\/brazil-x-ban-business-community.html\" title>clashed with governments<\/a>, and a revanchist \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/03\/business\/dealbook\/founder-mode-chesky-graham.html\" title>founder mode<\/a>\u201d movement led some tech chief executives to embrace micromanagement. In the fall, as the election gripped the nation, an ascendant \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/18\/magazine\/trump-donors-silicon-valley.html\" title>tech right<\/a>\u201d lined up behind Donald J. Trump. After his win, many tech leaders began <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/14\/technology\/trump-tech-amazon-meta-openai.html\" title>sucking up to the president-elect<\/a> in hopes of an easier second term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Every year in this column, I try to shine the spotlight on a few tech projects that I think contributed positively to humanity. As always, my criteria for what constitutes \u201cgood tech\u201d are vague and arbitrary, but it has become an important exercise for me. One reason is that it helps me offset any subconscious negativity bias I have during the year. Another is that I\u2019ve heard from previous recipients that getting an award for their work (even one that consists purely of a mention in a newspaper column, and has no prize attached) has inspired them to keep going. I think technologists should use their powers for the public good, and I hope everyone on this year\u2019s list will be similarly encouraged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So with no further ado, here are this year\u2019s Good Tech Awards:<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-5f54d722\">To Epoch AI, for giving us reliable data on the A.I. boom<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Few groups this year were more widely praised among A.I. insiders than Epoch AI, a small nonprofit research organization whose work has helped lawmakers, academics and the public at large understand what\u2019s happening in A.I.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Epoch AI was started in 2022 and is run today by Jaime Sevilla, a 28-year-old Spanish A.I. researcher who believes that the industry needs better data about its own trends and trajectories. The firm maintains public <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/epoch.ai\/blog\/announcing-epoch-ai-data-hub\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">databases of A.I. models<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/epoch.ai\/data\/machine-learning-hardware\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">A.I. hardware<\/a>, and publishes research on A.I. trends, including an influential report this year about whether A.I. models can continue to grow at their current pace. (Epoch AI concluded they most <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/epoch.ai\/blog\/can-ai-scaling-continue-through-2030\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">likely could until 2030<\/a>.)
