The goal, though, has always been the same: to become a better, happier version of myself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But while there\u2019s nothing wrong with self-improvement, experts say that focusing on our relationships with the people around us may go a long way to making us happier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cOur society has treated happiness as a highly individualistic pursuit \u2014 the idea being that it\u2019s something that you make for yourself, that you get for yourself, and you do it all alone,\u201d said Stephanie Harrison, founder of The New Happy, an online platform that uses art and science to change how we think about happiness, and author of \u201cNew Happy: Getting Happiness Right in a World That\u2019s Got It Wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">We tend to set our sights on self-focused goals, Ms. Harrison said, \u201calmost plucking them out of thin air, thinking, \u2018OK, this will be the thing that makes me happy.\u2019\u201d Instead, she suggested, pivot to \u201cthink about happiness as something we create together and for each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There is ample research \u2014 including <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2017\/04\/over-nearly-80-years-harvard-study-has-been-showing-how-to-live-a-healthy-and-happy-life\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">one of the longest-running studies on human happiness<\/a> \u2014 to show that our interpersonal relationships are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/02\/insider\/happiness-project.html\" title>crucial to our<\/a> well-being, protecting <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/psychiatryonline.org\/doi\/10.1176\/appi.ajp.2020.19111158\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">against depression<\/a>, bolstering our <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3150158\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">physical health<\/a> and making our lives <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/doiLanding?doi=10.1037\/pspi0000418\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">more meaningful<\/a>.
