of more &#8220;complex&#8221; pregnancies &#8211; because the mother is older or obese, for example. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But some mothers are choosing to have a Caesarean &#8211; where the baby is delivered by surgeons cutting into the mother&#8217;s abdomen and womb &#8211; for non-medical reasons.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In 2013-14, 13% of deliveries were Caesareans. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Last year, of the 398,675 deliveries performed by the NHS in England where the method of starting labour was recorded, 101,264 (25%) were Caesareans.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">And of those, 67,100 were a planned or &#8220;elective&#8221; procedure.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">&#8216;Rising rates&#8217;<!-- --><\/h2>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) president Dr Ranee Thakar said complex births were a &#8220;major factor&#8221;. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;We are seeing national rising rates of obesity and people choosing to have children at a later state in their life, both of which can increase the chance of complications,&#8221; she said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The likelihood of a Caesarean increased with the mother&#8217;s age. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">And for those aged over 39, it was the most common method of delivery.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Most women under 30, meanwhile, had &#8220;spontaneous&#8221; vaginal births, without medical intervention to start labour. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A third of all deliveries were induced, meaning labour was started using artificial methods such as a hormone drip or a pessary.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The RCOG does not promote one form of birth over another. <!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">&#8216;Major operation&#8217;<!-- --><\/h2>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Experts say women should have a choice about how they give birth, whenever possible and safe.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">And the NHS recently removed a limit on how many Caesareans it performs.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Maternity units were previously encouraged to promote natural births and <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-60462720\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">keep the Caesarean rate to about 20%<!-- --><\/a>.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But NHS advice now says <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/caesarean-section\/\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\">women have the right to a planned Caesarean<!-- --><\/a> if safe. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">An NHS spokesman said: &#8220;A Caesarean is a major operation that comes with risks, so it&#8217;s usually done when it&#8217;s the safest option for women and their baby.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;However, some do choose to have a C-section for a non-medical reason.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;NHS maternity teams across the country are fully committed to providing the safest and most personalised care possible to all women, according to best-practice guidance and informed by evidence, to help them to achieve the type of birth they would like.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Getty ImagesOne out of every four babies is now born by Caesarean section,<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"close","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[33],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-18427","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-health"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/18427","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=18427"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/18427\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":18431,"href":"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/18427\/revisions\/18431"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=18427"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=18427"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/medexperts.pro\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=18427"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
