Meta said on Wednesday that it had donated $1 million to President-elect Donald J. Trump\u2019s inaugural fund, in the latest move by Mark Zuckerberg, the company\u2019s chief executive, to foster a positive rapport with Mr. Trump.<\/p>\n

The Silicon Valley company did not provide details of why it made the donation, but the move came just weeks after Mr. Zuckerberg met with Mr. Trump<\/a> at Mar-a-Lago. During that meeting last month, the two men exchanged pleasantries and Mr. Zuckerberg congratulated Mr. Trump on winning the presidency. Mr. Zuckerberg also had a meal with Marco Rubio, Mr. Trump\u2019s pick for Secretary of State, according to a person who saw the meeting happen.<\/p>\n

A Meta spokesman said at the time that Mr. Zuckerberg was \u201cgrateful for the invitation to join President Trump for dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Zuckerberg is one of many tech chief executives who have worked to forge direct relationships with Mr. Trump. Even before last month\u2019s election, Mr. Zuckerberg, Apple\u2019s Tim Cook and Google\u2019s Sundar Pichai started reaching out to Mr. Trump<\/a>, sometimes flattering him and criticizing his opposition, as they aimed to put themselves in a position that could potentially benefit their businesses.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump previously had a strained relationship with Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. He had accused the company of restricting him and other conservative voices across its apps. After the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, Meta had blocked Mr. Trump<\/a> on its platforms, though his accounts have since been reinstated.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump had also personally criticized Mr. Zuckerberg, once saying that the executive should be jailed in retaliation for \u201cplotting against<\/a>\u201d him during the 2020 election.<\/p>\n

But over the summer, Mr. Zuckerberg had at least two private phone calls with Mr. Trump. In one call, Mr. Zuckerberg wished Mr. Trump well and said he was \u201cpraying\u201d for him after an assassination attempt this summer at a rally in Butler, Penn. In an interview at the time, Mr. Zuckerberg said Mr. Trump looked like a \u201cbadass\u201d after being shot at the rally and pumping his fist to the crowd.<\/p>\n
