Is that too much to ask?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For many people, yes. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db436.htm\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The United States is tired<\/a>, according to the National Sleep Foundation, the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronicdisease\/resources\/infographic\/sleep.htm\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> and the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/sleep-deprivation#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20Centers%20for,at%20least%20once%20a%20month.\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">National Institutes of Health<\/a>, and there is a link between poor sleep and depression, the N.S.F.\u2019s 2023 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thensf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/NSF-2023-Sleep-in-America-Poll-Report.pdf\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sleep in America poll<\/a> found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the hospitality world, that\u2019s a business opportunity. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/stories.hilton.com\/releases\/2024-trends-report\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Hilton\u2019s 2024 trends report<\/a> revealed that the main reason people currently travel is to rest and recharge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHotels locked in a death match with Airbnb have begun to explore ways in which to compete by offering services and amenities around the primary purpose of a hotel stay: a restful night\u2019s sleep,\u201d said Chekitan Dev, a distinguished professor at the Cornell University Nolan School of Hotel Administration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe earlier paradigm of a vacation was that sleeping was the most boring thing you could do while on holiday,\u201d said Kaushik Vardharajan, an associate professor at the Boston University School of Hospitality Administration. \u201cIt is only during the last 10 years or so that we have as a society started talking about the importance of sleep from a health and wellness perspective.\u201d Now, he said, a good night\u2019s rest isn\u2019t just a selling point for hotels; it\u2019s a \u201cwhole fast-growing industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">From A.I.-assisted beds to on-call hypnotherapists, today\u2019s sleep tourism is, essentially, an old dog with new tricks. \u201cThis is around the seventh or eighth time this has come up as kind of a topic\u201d since the mid-1980s, said Bjorn Hanson, an adjunct professor at the New York University Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality. Even before that, luxury hotels introduced perks for better sleep, like pillow menus in the 1960s.
