This year, he said, his family\u2019s feast will include a 24-pound turkey raised by a local 4-H participant, along with the traditional sides.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Then, he added, they won\u2019t cook again for days. \u201cWe\u2019ll be like sloths, and everybody will just go heat something up in the microwave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Chapman studies food safety for a living, so he has thought carefully about how to make leftovers last. We asked him and other experts for their best tips on this, so everyone can continue to enjoy the spoils of their labor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-450b04b2\">How long can leftovers be stored?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">According to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foodsafety.gov\/blog\/thanksgiving-leftovers-safe-keeping-weekend-grazing\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">federal guidelines<\/a>, most refrigerated leftovers \u2014 including cooked turkey; gravy; traditional sides like stuffing, mashed potatoes and green beans; and desserts like pumpkin pie \u2014 should be consumed within three to four days. So by the Monday after Thanksgiving, those foods should be gone or in the freezer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even so, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foodsafety.gov\/keep-food-safe\/foodkeeper-app\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">there are exceptions<\/a>. Fruit pies can be kept for one to two days at room temperature, or for a week in the refrigerator. Packaged breads and rolls are good for 14 to 18 days at room temperature, and homemade bread for up to five days.
