In the darkness lurked some of the world\u2019s most unusual mammals, and I had come to Borneo to fulfill a lifelong dream to see them: catlike <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecivetproject.com\/civets\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">civets<\/a>, scaled anteaters called <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/species\/pangolin\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">pangolins<\/a> and big-eyed <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/magazine\/issues\/fall-2018\/articles\/flying-lemurs-or-colugos-can-t-technically-fly-and-aren-t-technically-lemurs\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">colugos<\/a> that spread their body flat as they glide from trunk to trunk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the open back of a pickup truck, two wildlife spotters stood in front of me, whirling their flashlights. To my right stood my father, whose lifelong obsession with wildlife had inspired my own. Clothes damp from the humidity, we plunged deeper into the moonlit jungle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">My father and I had long wanted to travel to Borneo together, inspired by an online community of people called mammal watchers, who shared tantalizing stories about their sightings on the island on the website <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mammalwatching.com\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">mammalwatching.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mammal watching is superficially similar to bird-watching: trying to see as many different wild species as possible. It is hard \u2014 mammals can be elusive \u2014 but rewarding, as the most interesting mammals dwell in the earth\u2019s wildest and most vulnerable places. Searching for these creatures is both an adventure and an exercise in supporting conservation, particularly in Borneo, where palm oil plantations have replaced large areas of rainforest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So much of my interaction with mammal watching had been virtual that, on a warm June night, as we rumbled through the 140,000-acre <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/deramakot.sabah.gov.my\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Deramakot Forest Reserve<\/a> in the Malaysian state of Sabah, I could hardly believe what I was seeing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A flashlight caught a gleam on a branch to the left.
