But we all struggle with distraction \u2014 and the techniques that drivers use to optimize their performance can help anyone to be more intentional and effective in all sorts of situations. We asked McLaren Formula 1 team driver Oscar Piastri (that\u2019s him, in the video above), along with a sports psychologist and an attention expert, for tricks to stay on track.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4dd5c89\">Visualize important challenges in advance.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">F1 racers use simulators and mental rehearsal ahead of an event so that when they are driving, they can focus on driving, rather than wondering what\u2019s around the next turn. \u201cWe\u2019re going on the simple premise that a lot of planning and practice and rehearsal makes things more automated,\u201d said Robbie Anderson, a sports psychologist at Hintsa Performance in Finland who works with multiple F1 drivers. Racers visualize options, and then visualize doing the most favorable option several times, until it feels automatic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Piastri \u2014 who is currently <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/results\/2024\/drivers\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">No. 4 in driver standings<\/a> for the 2024 season with two wins, and who is racing in the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/racing\/2024\/las-vegas\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Las Vegas Grand Prix<\/a> this weekend \u2014 said he spends about a day training in a simulator before each event, \u201cgetting a fundamental idea of what to do and where.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The most effective kind of visualization recreates the situation as realistically as possible, Dr. Anderson said. \u201cYou\u2019re trying to pick out key sensory information \u2014 the feel of the steering wheel, the closeness of your car.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-2\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">You can do the same thing when you\u2019re preparing for a presentation or a job interview by creating a mental image of what you will see looking out from a stage, or of the person who\u2019ll be interviewing you. The idea is \u201cto put yourself in the first-person perspective of a given moment,\u201d Dr. Anderson said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4e8015f1\">Talk yourself through it.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Anderson coaches drivers to use self-talk to help them on the course. This can be instructional (\u201cSee the target smooth through the exit\u201d) or motivational (\u201cGame on!\u201d).
