The rains failed to arrive in February, when the maize, which is the staple grain, needed it most. Crops died. Cattle died. Some <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/emergencies\/southern-africa-drought\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">27 million people,<\/a> many already on the edge of hunger, lacked sufficient food.
