As you age, your body\u2019s soft tissues, especially the joints, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/17\/well\/move\/connective-tissues-exercise-health-tips.html\" title>become more rigid<\/a> and can make daily tasks much more difficult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Eventually, your joints can stiffen so much that basic movement, like walking, becomes uncomfortable or even painful, which can increase your risk of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7385684\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">falling or developing arthritis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis often creates a vicious cycle where joint stiffness leads to sedentary behavior, which leads to weaker and stiffer joints,\u201d said Brad Manor, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Recent <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/sms.14708\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">studies<\/a> have found a correlation between joint health and longevity, and that people with better lower limb mobility <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15977454\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">are less likely<\/a> to suffer from falls in their older years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A joint is any place in the body where two bones meet. Hinge joints, like the knee, bend and straighten. Ball-and-socket joints, like the shoulder, move in multiple ways and rotate. And each one has a specific range of motion that you want to maintain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For example, your ankle should be mobile enough for you to raise the ball of your foot at least one inch off the ground while keeping your heel on the floor.
