One wellness coach on TikTok went so far as to say that in order \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@higherupwellness\/video\/7296936913770925354\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">to be a functioning member of society<\/a>,\u201d everyone should be taking them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The premise that this essential mineral can treat such a wide range of issues rests on the idea that many people are deficient in it. But is that true? And will replenishing your body\u2019s magnesium solve your health problems?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">We asked experts if the claims hold up to scientific scrutiny.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-5f1b3ba4\">How common is magnesium deficiency?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Most people in the United States do not have a serious magnesium deficiency, said Dr. Edward Saltzman, an associate professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. If they did, he said, they\u2019d have noticeable symptoms like nausea, vomiting, numbness, tingling, seizures and abnormal heart rhythms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But national diet surveys do suggest that at least <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ars.usda.gov\/ARSUserFiles\/80400530\/pdf\/usual\/Usual_Intake_gender_WWEIA_2017_March%202020.pdf\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">half of people in the United States<\/a> aren\u2019t meeting federal recommendations \u2014 at least 310 or 320 milligrams of magnesium per day for women who are not pregnant (depending on their age); and at least 400 or 420 milligrams for men (also depending on age).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Not consuming enough magnesium could have subtler, slower-burning consequences, Dr. Saltzman said. A blood test, for instance, won\u2019t give you a very accurate assessment, said Katherine L.
