Trump<\/a> to lead the Department of Health and Human Services \u2014 has said that he would \u201cfix our broken food system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In interviews and on social media, Mr. Kennedy has made a number of claims about the country\u2019s food supply and eating habits. We fact-checked five of his most repeated refrains.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-209f22be\">Ultraprocessed Foods<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">His claim:<\/strong> Ultraprocessed foods are driving the obesity epidemic, and they should be removed from school lunches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">What the research suggests:<\/strong> Many public health and nutrition experts agree that ultraprocessed foods \u2014 which make up an estimated <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-023-37457-1\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">73 percent of the U.S. food supply<\/a> \u2014 are probably contributing to the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/14\/well\/obesity-epidemic-america.html\" title>obesity crisis<\/a> in the United States, and it would be beneficial to cut back on them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the category is wide-ranging, and it\u2019s not clear if <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/05\/well\/eat\/ultraprocessed-foods-types-unhealthy-study.html\" title>all ultraprocessed foods are harmful<\/a>, experts say. There may be downsides to avoiding some ultraprocessed foods, like flavored yogurts and whole wheat breads and cereals, they add, because they can provide valuable nutrients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Lindsey Smith Taillie, an associate professor of nutrition at the U.N.C. Gillings School of Global Public Health, said that it would be \u201ctransformative\u201d to remove ultraprocessed foods from school lunches.
