The U.N. has estimated that most of the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/interactives\/beat-plastic-pollution\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">400 million metric tons<\/a> churned out annually \u2014 a doubling of production since 2000 \u2014 will remain on Earth in some form as they are broken down into teeny specks by sunlight, wind and the sea.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Roughly 20 years ago, Richard Thompson, a marine biologist, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.1094559\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">first discovered<\/a> a worrisome accumulation of small plastic particles in ocean habitats and coined the word \u201cmicroplastics.\u201d Since then, scientists have been finding these <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/25\/opinion\/plastic-air-pollution.html\" title>fragments everywhere<\/a>, from <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/plastics-remote-places-microplastics-earth-mount-everest\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">remote<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/04\/18\/science\/what-are-microplastics.html\" title>mountain peaks<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/search\/research-news\/5461\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the Arctic<\/a> to the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/03\/science\/ocean-plastic-animals.html\" title>ocean seafloor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the decade that followed, scientists began to discover microplastics embedded in a wide range of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/from-fish-to-humans-a-microplastic-invasion-may-be-taking-a-toll\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">living creatures<\/a>, including in the seafood we eat.
