Their parents are grappling with what that means for them.<\/p>\n<section class=\"meteredContent css-1r7ky0e\">\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Lydia Birk, 56, has held on to her favorite copy of \u201cThe Velveteen Rabbit\u201d since her three children \u2014 now in their 20s and 30s \u2014 were young.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She loved being a stay-at-home mother, and filled her family\u2019s home with books. (All of her children could read before they started school, Ms. Birk recalled with pride.) She hoped one day to be a \u201ccool\u201d grandma who would share her favorite stories with a new generation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But none of her children want to have kids. And though that decision is \u201cright for them,\u201d Ms. Birk said, it still breaks her heart. \u201cI don\u2019t have young children anymore, and now I\u2019m not going to have grandchildren,\u201d she said. \u201cSo that part of my life is just over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Like Ms. Birk, a growing number of Gen Xers and baby boomers are facing the sometimes painful fact that they are never going to become grandparents. A little more than half of adults 50 and older had at least one grandchild in 2021, down from nearly 60 percent in 2014.
