But doctors and public health officials also worry that the move will have a far broader effect, by giving credence to false claims about the vaccines and fueling further efforts across the nation to stop people from getting vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis is a real challenge for us, because I don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to be the last department that\u2019s going to be directed to do that,\u201d said Michael Osterholm, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota. He added that the decision could further undermine trust in public health institutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Vaccine hesitancy and misinformation have hampered the uptake of Covid shots since they were first rolled out, but doctors say that pushback against the vaccines appears to have gained even more momentum very recently. This week, Donald Trump suggested that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/03\/us\/politics\/trump-rfk-jr-vaccines-fluoride.html\" title>he may be open to banning some vaccines<\/a> if he wins the election, and said he would discuss the idea with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a prominent vaccine critic.
