Trump and his allies have falsely claimed that scores of noncitizens \u2014 including illegal immigrants \u2014 are voting or trying to vote in the United States presidential elections.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-522fa8bd\"><span>Why it is false<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It is illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections, and studies have concluded that noncitizen voting is essentially nonexistent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A 2017 analysis from the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/research-reports\/noncitizen-voting-missing-millions\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Brennan Center for Justice<\/a>, a progressive nonprofit, showed that election officials in 42 jurisdictions found only about 30 incidents of potential noncitizen voting in the 2016 election \u2014 among more than 23.5 million votes cast, or 0.0001 percent. The Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/commentary\/rights-bogus-claims-about-noncitizen-voting-fraud\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">called claims of widespread noncitizen voting \u201cbogus\u201d<\/a> this year after reviewing state policies and previous audits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Brad Raffensperger, Georgia\u2019s Republican secretary of state, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/23\/politics\/georgia-raffensperger-noncitizens-registered\/index.html\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">announced in October<\/a> that the state had found only 20 noncitizens among 8.2 million registered voters. An <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/sos.ga.gov\/news\/citizenship-audit-finds-1634-noncitizens-attempted-register-vote\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">earlier audit<\/a> he conducted in 2022, going back 25 years, identified 1,634 people who had tried to register to vote but whose citizenship couldn\u2019t be verified. None were allowed to cast a ballot.
