As of Oct. 12, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/covidvaxview\/weekly-dashboard\/?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/imz-managers\/coverage\/covidvaxview\/interactive\/vaccination-dashboard.html\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">only around 12 percent<\/a> of adults reported receiving an updated vaccine, according to data from the C.D.C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The vaccines are well matched against the variants that are currently circulating, offering some defense against infection and curbing a person\u2019s risk of hospitalization or death from the virus. Vaccines also reduce a person\u2019s chances of developing long Covid. But immunity wanes over time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere\u2019s just a greater need than ever to have a more durable strategy, vaccination-wise,\u201d said Dr. Marc Sala, co-director of the Northwestern Medicine Comprehensive Covid-19 Center in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Covid poses a particular challenge because the virus spreads year-round, spiking in unpredictable waves; it\u2019s difficult to sustain protection, especially among people with compromised immune systems.
