But does finding the real Mr. Nakamoto really matter?<\/p>\n<section class=\"meteredContent css-1r7ky0e\">\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There are two ambitious missions behind \u201cMoney Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery,\u201d a new documentary by the filmmaker Cullen Hoback that was released Tuesday by HBO.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The first is to solve one of the internet\u2019s great mysteries by revealing, at long last, the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous programmer who created Bitcoin in 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The film\u2019s second mission is to make the case that the identity of Bitcoin\u2019s creator actually matters \u2014 that Bitcoin, for all its flaws, represents an important technological breakthrough with far-reaching implications, and that there are good reasons, aside from prurience, to care who created it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Let\u2019s start with the first part. Among Bitcoin buffs and cryptocurrency journalists, the mystery of Mr. Nakamoto\u2019s identity has been the subject of fierce debate and painstaking investigation for more than a decade. But nothing has been proved conclusively, and a handful of bungled attempts to crack the case \u2014 most notoriously <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/03\/18\/business\/media\/man-named-by-newsweek-issues-denial-on-bitcoin-claim.html\" title>a 2014 Newsweek cover story<\/a> that put the blame on a physicist, Dorian Nakamoto, who turned out to have nothing to do with Bitcoin at all \u2014 have only muddied the waters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">(My former colleague Nathaniel Popper suggested that Nick Szabo, who created a digital currency with similarities to Bitcoin, was most likely Satoshi Nakamoto back in 2015, but <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/05\/17\/business\/decoding-the-enigma-of-satoshi-nakamoto-and-the-birth-of-bitcoin.html\" title>Mr. Szabo has denied it<\/a>, and no conclusive evidence has emerged.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Hoback, who spent years diving down the rabbit hole of the QAnon conspiracy theory for his last film, \u201cQ: Into the Storm,\u201d took a similarly exhaustive approach this time.
