They\u2019re in our water, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/31\/climate\/pfas-fertilizer-sludge-farm.html\" title>our soil<\/a> and in everyday items like cookware, mascara or waterproof clothing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And there\u2019s mounting evidence that this family of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/comptox.epa.gov\/dashboard\/chemical-lists\/pfasmaster\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">thousands of synthetic chemicals<\/a> can increase the risk of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/dceg.cancer.gov\/research\/what-we-study\/pfas#:~:text=PFAS%20are%20a%20component%20of,and%20other%20highly%20exposed%20populations.\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">some types of cancer<\/a>, developmental and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.niehs.nih.gov\/research\/supported\/centers\/core\/spotlight\/fertility\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">fertility issues<\/a>, and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pfas\/our-current-understanding-human-health-and-environmental-risks-pfas#:~:text=Developmental%20effects%20or%20delays%20in,infections%2C%20including%20reduced%20vaccine%20response.\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">other health problems<\/a>. So it makes sense to limit our exposure to them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That\u2019s easier said than done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Public health experts say that it\u2019s ultimately the responsibility of policymakers to adopt tougher rules against the harmful chemicals, and for companies to stop using them. But in the meantime, how can you avoid PFAS, without turning your life upside down?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here are some basic steps you can take.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-2687810\">Be wary of anything in contact with food.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Consider reducing your reliance on takeout food packaging. Water- and greaseproof food packaging, whether paper, plastic or coated metal, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acs.est.3c03702\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">often contain PFAS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Although big brands like McDonald\u2019s and Whole Foods <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/toxicfreefuture.org\/mind-the-store\/retailers-committing-to-phase-out-pfas-as-a-class-in-food-packaging-and-products\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">have committed<\/a> to get PFAS out of their supply chains, \u201cwe\u2019re not quite there yet,\u201d said Liz Hitchcock, policy expert at Toxic-Free Future, an environmental health research and advocacy nonprofit.
