But many researchers outside of those fields may miss out on opportunities for the international acclaim that comes with being named a laureate of the Nobel, the most prestigious award in science.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many have argued for an expansion of the Nobel categories, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/just-3-nobel-prizes-cover-all-of-science-how-research-is-done-today-poses-a-challenge-for-these-prestigious-awards-213688\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">especially because science has grown increasingly interdisciplinary<\/a> since the prizes were established in 1900. But it has yet to occur. In the meantime, awards have popped up to honor excluded fields.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Below are nine prizes that scientists and mathematicians who may never earn a Nobel can look forward to.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-3a883d26\">The Abel Prize for Mathematics<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Established in 2002, the Abel Prize awards 7.5 million Norwegian kroner, or about $700,000, annually to a mathematician with \u201cpioneering scientific achievements\u201d in the field.
