But what about the stomach?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While going for a jog with a sensitive stomach is rarely appealing, regular activity is an important part of treating <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10389-024-02278-z\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">many gut maladies<\/a>, particularly <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/gastro.org\/press-releases\/aga-issues-clinical-guidelines-outlining-drug-treatment-plans-for-patients-with-irritable-bowel-syndrome-ibs\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">irritable bowel syndrome<\/a>. In fact, a lack of movement, perhaps because of an injury, can even be the initial trigger for I.B.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cExercise is part of lifestyle management, which is the first-line treatment for any patient with I.B.S. or other bowel-related issues,\u201d said Dr. Anthony Lembo, the research director of the Cleveland Clinic\u2019s Digestive Disease Institute.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-301a83ab\">What does exercise have to do with a healthy stomach?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Studies <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/gut.bmj.com\/content\/73\/6\/922\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">have consistently shown<\/a> that I.B.S. patients who exercise regularly have fewer symptoms than those who don\u2019t. For <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-023-45605-2\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">some people<\/a> it primarily causes constipation, while others experience mostly diarrhea or a combination of the two.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The digestive system has a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nrgastro.2016.107\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">complex network of neurons<\/a> \u2014 sometimes called the \u201csecond brain\u201d \u2014 that controls blood flow, secretions and hundreds of gut functions through the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/06\/02\/well\/mind\/vagus-nerve-mental-health.html\" title>vagus nerve<\/a>, which connects the brain to organs in the body.
