But OpenAI still hopes to raise hundreds of billions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It is an extravagant plan, but there is an explanation for it.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-63473f8d\">Why does OpenAI care so much about chips and data centers?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Chatbots like OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2023\/04\/26\/upshot\/gpt-from-scratch.html\" title>learn their skills<\/a> by analyzing <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/06\/technology\/tech-giants-harvest-data-artificial-intelligence.html\" title>almost all the text on the internet<\/a>, including books, Wikipedia pages, news articles, computer programs and countless other online sources.
