The maze of complicated-looking equipment \u2014 and the crowd of people who already knew what they were doing \u2014 were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/09\/well\/move\/gym-workout-anxiety-fears.html\" title>immediately intimidating<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After mustering the confidence to ask one of the in-house trainers for a tour, I learned that most weight rooms consist of two main sections: the free weights (dumbbells, kettlebells, barbells) and the machines. You can build a well-rounded routine using one section or a combination of the two.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s40279-023-01949-3\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">one strength session<\/a> a week can have a positive impact on your health. \u201cOverall the biggest benefit comes from doing nothing to doing something,\u201d said Lauren Colenso-Semple, a muscle physiologist. Strength training has been <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35599175\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">shown<\/a> to reduce the risk of all-cause mortality, decrease <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/article-abstract\/2680311\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">symptoms of depression<\/a> and minimize <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10435089\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">fall risks<\/a>, among other benefits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Using both machines and free weights can also make it easier to perform daily tasks, by improving your <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5609666\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">joint mobility<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9935664\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">range of motion<\/a>. \u201cBeing a stronger and more muscular person makes you a more functional person,\u201d Dr. Colenso-Semple said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-749e2965\">Weight Machines<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Weight machines are a great introduction to strength training because they are relatively safe and easier to master than free weights, said Kelvin Gary, a New York City-based personal trainer and gym owner.
