The average serving of spaghetti and meatballs doubled. Bagels ballooned into six-inch-wide monstrosities. Burritos started to weigh more than a Harry Potter hardcover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Nutritionists and policymakers haven\u2019t had much success fighting portion creep, which has been linked to health problems associated with obesity. Attempts to legislate soda sizes were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/la-pol-ca-soda-industry-quashes-bills-20190703-story.html#:~:text=%E2%80%9CBig%20Gulp%E2%80%9D%20ban,not%20get%20out%20of%20committee.\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">shot down<\/a>. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/22872257\/get-rid-of-calorie-counts-on-menus\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Calorie counts<\/a> on menus have largely gone ignored and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5378635\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">might even be harmful.<\/a> Even celebrity-dusted <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/letsmove.obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/plan-healthy-meal#:~:text=Keep%20an%20Eye%20on%20Portion%20Sizes&amp;text=For%20example%2C%20provide%20portions%20equal,in%20a%20small%20coffee%20cup.\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">public health campaigns<\/a> from the White House didn\u2019t move the needle much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But today, a combo plate of economics, demographics and climate science may accomplish what years of official hand-wringing could not: loosening the grip that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/92-percent-of-americas-restaurants-serve-oversized-portions\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">super-size restaurant portions<\/a> have on the national diet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Americans are not likely to break up with endless pasta bowls and half-pound burgers overnight. But the relationship has shifted significantly. More than 75 percent of customers say they want smaller portions for less money, according to the 2024 National Restaurant Association <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/restaurant.org\/research-and-media\/media\/press-releases\/restaurant-industry-sales-forecast-to-set-1-1-trillion-record-in-2024\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">report on the industry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Restaurants sinking under rising food costs are trying to figure out how to sell smaller servings without upsetting value-minded customers. This month, the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/msb.georgetown.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/POWER-OF-PORTIONSdigital-1.pdf\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Portion Balance Coalition<\/a>, based at Georgetown University\u2019s McDonough School of Business, began a yearlong study to puzzle out the problem. They hope to sign on at least 10 high-volume chains like Panda Express and Chick-fil-A.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some restaurants have already taken action. In January, Subway introduced <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.restaurantdive.com\/news\/subway-sidekicks-footlong-auntie-annes-pretzels-cinnabon-churros-cookie\/704873\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.restaurantdive.com\/news\/subway-sidekicks-footlong-auntie-annes-pretzels-cinnabon-churros-cookie\/704873\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">snack-focused menu<\/a> that includes smaller bites like $3 hot wraps. Burger King\u2019s largest franchisee shrank <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/02\/25\/business\/burger-king-nuggets-meal-reduction\/index.html\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">its 10-piece chicken nugget order<\/a> to eight.
