It will be a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/26\/technology\/personaltech\/google-pixel-fold-review.html\" title>foldable<\/a>, a phone with a bendable display that flips open like a book to increase its screen size and closes up to fit in my pocket.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">These folding phones, from companies like Samsung, Motorola and Huawei, have been <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/02\/11\/technology\/personaltech\/foldable-phones-samsung.html\" title>getting buzz since their debut in 2019<\/a> thanks to their novel design. But they remained niche because of issues with software and durability. And at upward of $1,500, they were too expensive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A shift is underway. The devices keep getting better, and some are becoming cheaper. IDC, the research firm, predicts that handset makers will <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=US51916324\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">ship 25 million foldable phones<\/a> this year, up nearly 40 percent from last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After testing two different sizes of foldables that arrived in stores this summer \u2014 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.motorola.com\/us\/smartphones-razr-gen-4\/p?skuId=1121&amp;gad_source=1&amp;ds_rl=1276264\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Motorola\u2019s small $700 Razr<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/store.google.com\/config\/pixel_9_pro_fold?hl=en-US&amp;pli=1&amp;selections=eyJwcm9kdWN0RmFtaWx5IjoiY0dsNFpXeGZPVjl3Y205ZlptOXNaQT09In0%3D\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Google\u2019s jumbo $1,800 Pixel 9 Pro Fold<\/a> \u2014 I\u2019m convinced that phones with bendable screens will become mainstream in the next few years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Most of the issues have disappeared. They can become even more useful than a traditional smartphone.
