She tips it back, grimaces and then sticks out her tongue in disgust.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s medicinal, it\u2019s medicinal,\u201d she reminds herself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The reason for the shot was a recent meal, which she worried may have given her food poisoning, she said. And she had read in a study that because \u201calcohol is a sterilizer,\u201d it can protect against food-borne illness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But can it really?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There may be an ounce of truth to the notion that drinking alcohol around the time you eat contaminated food can reduce the chances of food poisoning, experts said. But the evidence to support the claim is limited. And depending on how much you drink, alcohol could hurt your immune system more than it might help. Here\u2019s what we know.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-314d3000\">What the Research Suggests<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Several small studies on food-borne illness outbreaks have indeed found that consuming alcohol was associated with protection from food poisoning, but they all have limitations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the study cited in the TikTok video, which was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/epidem\/fulltext\/2002\/03000\/the_protective_effect_of_alcoholic_beverages_on.20.aspx\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">published in 2002<\/a>, researchers described a salmonella outbreak that began at a 120-person banquet in Spain. At least 47 people became ill with vomiting or diarrhea, along with stomach cramps, fever or headache, after consuming contaminated tuna sandwiches and potato salad. The researchers found that those who reported having three or more drinks at the celebration were 46 percent less likely to become ill than those who didn\u2019t drink; and those who had up to three drinks were 27 percent less likely to develop symptoms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Likewise, in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/epidem\/abstract\/1992\/07000\/the_protective_effect_of_alcohol_on_the_occurrence.13.aspx\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a 1992 study<\/a> of a 61-person outbreak of hepatitis A from raw oysters in Florida, researchers found that those who reported drinking wine, whiskey or cocktails with the oysters were 90 percent less likely to get sick than those who did not drink.
