Murthy, said out loud what many parents might have only furtively admitted: Parenting today is too hard and stressful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Of course, there have always been concerns about families\u2019 well-being. And while some of today\u2019s parents\u2019 fears are newer \u2014 cellphones, school shootings, fentanyl \u2014 parents have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/11\/opinion\/parenting-has-always-been-hard.html\" title>always worried<\/a> about their children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So why has parental stress risen to the level of a rare surgeon general\u2019s warning about an urgent public health issue \u2014 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/23\/health\/surgeon-general-warnings-history.html\" title>putting it in the same category<\/a> as cigarettes and AIDS?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It\u2019s because today\u2019s parents <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/25\/upshot\/the-relentlessness-of-modern-parenting.html\" title>face something different and more demanding<\/a>: the expectation that they spend ever more time and money educating and enriching their children. These pressures, researchers say, are driven in part by fears about the modern-day economy \u2014 that if parents don\u2019t equip their children with every possible advantage, their children could fail to achieve a secure, middle-class life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This parenting style is known as intensive parenting, as the sociologist Sharon Hays <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/yalebooks.yale.edu\/book\/9780300076523\/the-cultural-contradictions-of-motherhood\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">described it<\/a> in the late 1990s.
