But I know the feeling, and I instantly recognized it when a colleague with young children told me about a concept called \u201cafter-school restraint collapse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The term, coined by the parenting expert Andrea Loewen Nair, describes the way kids can hold in their feelings all day at school and then release them by melting down at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After-school restraint collapse isn\u2019t a formal diagnosis, but it\u2019s a \u201ccommon phenomenon,\u201d said Rosanna Breaux, an assistant professor of psychology at Virginia Tech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Could it be that adults do this, too?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Absolutely, said Kathryn Humphreys, an associate professor of psychology and human development at Vanderbilt University \u2014 though we\u2019re more likely to be irritable or tense than to throw an all-out tantrum.
