But is there a biological reason for men\u2019s behavior?<\/p>\n<section class=\"meteredContent css-1r7ky0e\">\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">According to the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/man-flu\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Cambridge Dictionary<\/a>, man flu is \u201can illness such as a cold that is not serious, but that the person who has it treats as more serious, usually when this person is a man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">According to the farcical <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=Man-Flu\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Urban Dictionary<\/a>, man flu is \u201cmore painful than childbirth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Of course, man flu, which has been <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Zw9v6R4jCTc\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">parodied<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Sn4BDdQyX_c\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">online<\/a> for years, is not a diagnosable affliction, and it goes without saying that not all men become helpless fatalists when they have run-of-the-mill sniffles, while some women do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But experts say at the heart of the joke are some fascinating immunological differences that exist between the sexes \u2014 not only in humans, but also in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30288910\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">some other species<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere is something to the idea that men and women, males and females, suffer the effects of infection differently,\u201d said Marlene Zuk, a professor of ecology, evolution and behavior at the University of Minnesota.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-71684117\">Men tend to have weaker immune systems.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There is strong evidence that men are more likely to experience severe infections than women are when they get sick. The same was true during the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2740912\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">1918 flu pandemic<\/a>, when many more men than women died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some of this could be explained by behavior, said Dr. Matthew Memoli, a principal investigator at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Research finds that, in general, men <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10389-017-0798-z\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">take fewer precautions<\/a> to avoid getting sick, such as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0240785\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">wearing a mask<\/a> or washing their hands.
