The regulation is part of the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/strategy\/zero-pollution-action-plan_en\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Zero Pollution Action Plan,<\/a> an initiative that includes removing microplastics, chemical pesticides and even noise pollution from the environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The ban, which will go into effect at the beginning of next year, can help \u201cavoid the release of approximately 10 tons of mercury into the environment by 2030,\u201d Tilly Metz, a member of the European Parliament who worked on the legislation, said in an email.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The E.U. is going a big step further than required by the United Nations\u2019 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/minamataconvention.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/2024-07\/Minamata_Fact_Sheet_Products.pdf\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Minamata Convention<\/a>, a global treaty adopted by more than 140 countries including the United States, that requires countries to \u201cphase down\u201d the use of dental amalgam.
