Roberts, the senior associate dean for research at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The length and quality of your life will be determined in part by your genetics, she said. But <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/04\/well\/live\/live-longer-health.html\" title>how you live your life<\/a> is important, too, including how much you <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/01\/well\/move\/strength-exercises-aging.html\" title>exercise<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2023\/07\/07\/well\/live\/sleep-better-age.html\" title>sleep<\/a>, whether you drink excessively or smoke \u2014 and how you eat, Dr. Roberts said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Eating for longevity isn\u2019t an exact science, of course. It\u2019s unrealistic, and possibly unethical, for researchers to ask people to faithfully follow various diets for decades and then see how their lives turn out, said Dr. Frank Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard T.H.
