But mosquitoes can transmit pathogens that cause diseases, including <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/01\/well\/mosquitoes-west-nile-virus-symptoms.html\" title>West Nile virus<\/a> and, in very rare cases, a disease known as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/27\/us\/massachusetts-eee-mosquito-disease.html\" title>Eastern equine encephalitis<\/a>, or E.E.E.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">You can take simple precautions to keep mosquitoes away from your home and protect yourself when you\u2019re outdoors.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-3f400a16\">Get rid of standing water.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Female mosquitoes lay their eggs in still water, said Dina Fonseca, an entomology professor at Rutgers University, which means any source of standing water near your home is a potential breeding ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Look out for water pooling inside your gutters where leaves have built up, near leaky sprinklers, on top of tarps and in flower pots or buckets you keep outside. Mosquitoes <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mosquitoes\/about\/life-cycle-of-aedes-mosquitoes.html\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">don\u2019t need much<\/a> water to lay their eggs, so try to be thorough.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"Dropzone-1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s actually pretty sneaky,\u201d said Dr. Jen Wall Forrester, division director of infectious diseases at the University of Cincinnati. \u201cIt\u2019s really hard to get rid of all the water in your yard,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some communities have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"http:\/\/npic.orst.edu\/vecmlr.html\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">mosquito abatement<\/a> districts. If you\u2019ve cleaned up the water around your house but still find yourself swatting away mosquitoes, consider contacting your local district to see if they can manage the problem, said Daniel Markowski, technical advisor at the American Mosquito Control Association.
