But the longer the virus circulates in cattle, the more chances it gains to acquire the mutations necessary to set off an influenza pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI think the window is closing on our ability to contain the outbreak,\u201d said Dr. Krutika Kuppalli, an infectious-disease physician who worked at the World Health Organization until April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe\u2019re so quick to blame China for what happened with SARS-CoV-2, but we\u2019re not doing any better right now,\u201d she added. \u201cThat\u2019s how pandemics happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Half a year into the outbreak, H5N1 shows no signs of receding in U.S. dairy cattle or in the workers who tend them.
