The last time the W.H.O. made that call was in 2022, when the disease was still called monkeypox.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ultimately the outbreak affected <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/worldhealthorg.shinyapps.io\/mpx_global\/\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">nearly 100,000 people<\/a> worldwide, primarily gay and bisexual men, including <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/mpox\/response\/2022\/us-map.html\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">more than 32,000<\/a> in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The W.H.O.\u2019s decision this time was prompted by an escalating crisis of mpox concentrated in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It recently <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2024.08.13.24311555v1?%3Fcollection=\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">spread<\/a> to a dozen other African countries.
