Since the end of the mandate, and as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unwto.org\/news\/international-tourism-to-reach-pre-pandemic-levels-in-2024#:~:text=International%20tourism%20is%20expected%20to,economic%20and%20geopolitical%20downside%20risks.\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">travel has returned to or surpassed prepandemic levels<\/a>, most travelers have abandoned preventive measures, particularly masks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">With <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/12\/well\/coronavirus-vaccine-booster.html\" title>updated vaccines not available until the fall<\/a>, experts are reminding travelers about the benefits of masking, particularly in airports and poorly ventilated indoor environments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here\u2019s what you need to know about masks and your travel plans.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-39df6058\">What\u2019s going on with Covid right now?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The number of reported cases appears to be climbing both in the United States and abroad. In the United States, there are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#wastewater-surveillance\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cvery high\u201d<\/a> levels of the virus in wastewater samples nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The World Health Organization <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/m\/item\/covid-19-epidemiological-update-edition-170\" title rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that cases around the globe rose by 30 percent from June 24 to July 21, compared with the previous 28 days. Put simply: There\u2019s a lot of Covid out there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-5e3d73eb\">How effective are masks? What is the best mask to use?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">People who want to minimize their risk of respiratory illnesses like Covid (along with colds and the flu) should wear a mask while traveling, experts say. Even if <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/covid-masks-protection-stats.html\" title>you\u2019re the only person<\/a> wearing one on a train or at an airport, a mask continues to offer protection \u2014 provided you wear it properly, which means covering both your nose and your mouth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt does not eliminate the risk, but it substantially reduces the risk of exposure,\u201d said Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, the chief of research and development at the Veterans Affairs St. Louis Healthcare System, in Missouri. Aim for a high-quality mask, like an N95, a KN95 or a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/10\/well\/live\/kf94-mask.html\" title>KF94<\/a>, all of which filter out the overwhelming majority of virus particles and are far more effective at reducing the chance of a Covid infection than cloth or surgical versions.
