That might suggest it\u2019s prime time for another dose of protection. But updated vaccines that target <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/27\/health\/covid-vaccines-seniors-children.html\" title>newer variants of the virus<\/a> are expected to arrive this fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Experts said the right time for your next Covid shot will depend on your health status and what you\u2019re hoping to get from the vaccines.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4f981f7f\">If you\u2019re trying to get the most protection against the leading variants:<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Doctors say that many people may want to wait for the updated vaccines, which have been retooled to better protect against the current dominant strains of the virus. The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/27\/health\/covid-vaccines-seniors-children.html\" title>Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> has recommended that everyone ages 6 months or older receive an updated shot when they become available.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">An upcoming vaccine from the biotechnology company Novavax will target <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/14\/well\/live\/jn1-covid-infection-vaccine.html\" title>JN.1,<\/a> a coronavirus variant that accounted for the bulk of cases in the United States this winter. The Pfizer and Moderna shots coming this fall will target KP.2, a newer offshoot of JN.1 that\u2019s been circulating this summer.
